Japanese Morning & Afternoon Tea at Amberlea
At Amberlea, each Morning or Afternoon Tea is conceived as a true Zen experience – a moment set apart from the rush of daily life. Here, you will be welcomed into stillness and invited to savour a carefully prepared light meal: three delicate varieties of sushi and three seasonal Japanese desserts, chosen to reflect the beauty of the passing season. The experience is held in total privacy, allowing you to immerse yourself fully in the atmosphere of the tea house. You may choose to strike the Bell of Time, marking your presence in this fleetingencounter, before wandering through the tranquil garden and its quiet paths. Seated with a bowl of tea, gazing out at the landscape while soft shakuhachi (Zen flute) music drifts in the background, you will find yourself drawn into a state of harmony. The taste of tea, the rhythm of nature, and the poetry of silence join together to create a moment that is both mesmerising and unforgettable.

Japanese Cooking Classes at Amberlea
At Amberlea, we believe that food should be prepared with mindfulness, respect, and heart. Cooking, like tea, is a practice of presence — every ingredient chosen with care, every gesture a reflection of harmony.
Our classes are kept intentionally small — no more than 4 guests — ensuring that each participant receives close guidance, time to practice, and the freedom to ask questions.
✨ What you’ll learn:
• How to prepare authentic ramen, with rich broth and delicate toppings
• The art of rolling sushi, with balance and precision
• A selection of seasonal Japanese dishes, chosen to reflect tradition and taste
Once your dishes are prepared, you will be invited to the main tea house to enjoy the meal you have created. Surrounded by the quiet beauty of the garden, it becomes more than a class — it is a truly delightful and memorable experience, where learning and sharing come together in harmony.

Tea Ceremonies
🍵 Tea Ceremonies at Amberlea
Marking the Flow of the Seasons
At Amberlea Japanese Tea House, the tea ceremony becomes the poetry of time itself.
Each gathering reflects the season’s unique character — Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter — offering us a chance to pause, breathe, and find clarity in the quiet wisdom of Zen.
Every season invites us to see ourselves anew, in harmony with nature’s rhythm.
⸻
🌸 Spring Tea Ceremony — Renewal
Spring at Amberlea is a gentle awakening. The tea is shared as the garden stirs to life, blossoms opening like unspoken promises.
In this ceremony, we reflect on beginnings — the renewal of the spirit, the courage to open to change, the clarity of fresh waters flowing.
Here, tea becomes a celebration of hope and growth, reminding us that each moment is the seed of a new path.
⸻
☀ Summer Tea Ceremony — Vitality
In summer, the tea house is filled with brightness and warmth. A cool breeze, the song of cicadas, and the touch of sunlight on tatami weave together into a living tapestry.
The summer ceremony honours vitality and presence, teaching us to dwell fully in the energy of now.
Through tea, we discover the balance of joy and stillness — like shade beneath the midday sun — and the reminder that true abundance lies in simplicity.
⸻
🍂 Autumn Tea Ceremony — Reflection
As the leaves turn amber and scarlet, autumn invites us to let go with grace. The tea is prepared as nature begins to bow inward, whispering of impermanence.
This ceremony is a meditation on gratitude and release. We honour the beauty of what has passed and the clarity that comes with shedding what is no longer needed.
Each sip is a reminder that life’s richness is found in transience, and in the quiet strength of acceptance.
⸻
❄ Winter Tea Ceremony — Stillness
Winter draws us inward. The air is crisp, the garden hushed beneath frost and silence. Within the tea house, warmth and light gather softly around the hearth.
The winter ceremony is dedicated to stillness and clarity of mind — a space where silence speaks and presence deepens.
Here, we learn that even in the starkness of winter, there is beauty in pause, strength in quiet, and wisdom in waiting.
⸻
🌿 The Philosophy
Together, these four ceremonies form a cycle — a reminder that, like the seasons, our lives move through phases of renewal, energy, reflection, and stillness.
To sit in tea at Amberlea is to meet each season not only in the garden, but within ourselves.

A Day at Amberlea
At Amberlea Japanese Tea House, time unfolds gently, each moment leading into the next like the turning of the seasons. Guests are invited on a journey of stillness, warmth, and quiet beauty, where Kent’s harvest and Japanese tradition meet in harmony.
The Tea of Stillness
The day begins within the tea house, where guests gather in calm silence. A single bowl of tea is offered — its rising steam reflecting the cycles of nature, its taste reminding us that life is simple, fleeting, and profound. This quiet ceremony opens the heart to what follows.
The Zen Onsen
From the tea house, the path leads into the garden, where a warm Zen onsen awaits. Rose petals float on the water, soothing the feet as herbal tea and a delicate sweet are served. In this moment, the body softens, the mind rests, and nature itself becomes the host.
The Meal by the Hearth
As afternoon drifts into evening, guests gather around the glowing irori hearth. Here, fire becomes the centerpiece of the meal. The finest produce of Kent — crisp garden vegetables, fragrant rice, and fruits shaped into poetry — are prepared with the sensibilities of Japanese craft. Each dish is simple, seasonal, and shared, a reflection of warmth and togetherness.
The Poetry of Light
As night settles, lanterns are lit, their glow flickering across beams and branches. Guests step once more into the garden, where the cool air carries the scents of earth and blossom. The cycle of the day is complete: tea for stillness, water for renewal, fire for nourishment, and light for closure.
Within Kent’s beauty and Japan’s embrace, the essence of life is revealed — gentle, warm, and eternal in its impermanence.
